Rosa
gallica officinalis gallica | On our way back from an early summer outing overnight in a cabin
located in rural Brown County in Southern Ohio, I spotted this rose growning
along the road. I petitioned our driver to stop and let me inspect this rose,
and being the good and understanding friend, he did. Along the roadside in the
shallow ditch was a 30 to 40 foot long thicket of a rose that had obviously
done quite well there for a number of years. The scent from the rose was sweet
and intense. So, I had to try to take a few pieces home. I pulled out my trusty
pocket knife and dug a sucker or two from the ground. These photo to the left was taken in May of 1999 of a plant that is about 3 foot tall, and to my untrained eye certainly looks like a gallica. The stems are non-branching and the foliage is a dull, medium green. Hips formed this summer. Quite fragrant. This rose is most likely R. gallica officinallis. --- kbk May 1999 |
