"Some of the finest flowering shrubs we saw throughout the British Isles were Hybrid Musk Roses. Great use was made of them in many different gardens. At Newby Hall they were planted in tremendous mixed borders; at Hidcote they were interplanted with paeonies and other interesting perennials in small, intimate, walled gardens; at Lyegrove they were featured at intervals on top of low walls surrounding sunken gardens; and at Mt. Stewart, not far from Belfast, they were grown not only as bushes, but also as tall standards. Large-flowered clematis grew also on these standards: the mixture of pink roses and mauve clematis was very attractive."
Nancy Steen, 1966
