'Lawrence Johnston'. Climber
Pernet-Ducher, 1923, France,  'Mme. Eugène Verdier' x Rosa foetida persiana
aka 'Hidcote Yellow'
Lawrence Johnston 1999 May 23  From The Graham Stuart Thomas Rose Book:  "Raised in 1923 by Pernet-Ducher, this rose was out of the same cross as 'Le Rêve' ('Mme. Eugène Verdier' x Rosa foetida persiana). For some reason it did not appeal to the raiser, while 'Le Rêve' was put on the market. It languished unappreciated until Major Lawrence Johnston saw it, bought the original and only plant, and transferred it to his garden at Hidcote Manor, Gloucestershire, some time between the First and Second World Wars. There it was christened 'Hidcote Yellow' (but distinct from 'Hidcote Gold'; the growth is stronger, the foliage equally good, the yellow warmer and richer, and the flowers are better formed, with large petals. The scent is just as rich and powerful. Fortunately it flowers with equal abandon in June and also goes on producing flowers intermittenty through the summer. Shoots may grow up to 20 feet. The original plant still grows at Hidcote Manor, and young ones have been planted there."

See painting below by Graham S. Thomas
from his book, Plate 156. "A pair of modern style climbers:
'Lawrence Johnston' (1923), and 'Cupid' (1915).
The former is recurrent in early autumn and the latter has conspicuous heps."
