'Leverkusen' 2000 May 20

I have planted two plants of 'Leverkusen' on 8 foot pillars on either end of the front of my house with hopes of greeting visitors with lots of yellow, fragrant blooms. After two seasons, they have indeed climbed the pillars plus some, with judicious and painful pruning and training. The prickles are very sharp. So far I have only experienced a moderate spring and early summer flush of blooms, with occasional bloom throughout the summer. I will be patient with this rose, as I am enamored with yellow roses and impressed with 'Leverkusen's hardiness and healthy nature. No blackspot or mildew so far. And very little dieback of the canes, all the way to the tips. Oh, nice round hips are produced as well. My plants came from Antique Rose Emporium, and so far I detect a moderate strength scent.  kbk 2000 February 13

From The Graham Stuart Thomas Rose Book:  "Glossy light green leaves blend well with the light yellow blooms, large and double. Its grace, glittering foliage, pleasing colour, and lemony fragrance, a main crop and frequent later sprays of blooms, add up to a fine rose. Freely branching, can be used as a shrub or hedge with suitable training and pruning. Will achieve 10 feet or more on a wall."

"APPLIED to the rose, the word "climbing" is improper, since, unlike true climbing plants, it has no means of fastening itself. In other words, it must be artificially attached to something if it is to climb. The French have a much better word to define this class-" sarmenteux"-which indicates long, supple branches, or sarments."
