The following are the roses I grow. The year of introduction of the rose follows the name. Many are bought locally or are from trades, a good number are mail order, and a few are found. Most are on their own roots. All color photographs, unless otherwise noted, were taken in my garden with an Olympus D-320L digital camera, and starting in May 2000 were taken with an Olympus C2020Z. As of December 2001 I am using an Olympus E20-N. Descriptions and cultural details about the various classes (and individual roses) have been included using older, not-readily-available books and catalogs. It is fascinating to read the words of rose enthusiasts of former days, and then to step outside and examine the same cultivar or species growing in your own garden. The scent and the form before you the same as admired decades and even centuries ago.

There is always room for beauty; memory
A myriad lovely blossoms may enclose,
But, whatsoe'er hath been, there still must be
Room for another rose.
The Poetry of Earth - Florence Earle Coates

FOUND / UNKNOWN (I would appreciate any help identifying these)
1. "Martha Washington" - ?moss, damask, centifolia?, very fragrant, very double pink, light green, matte leaves. --this rose is probably 'Bella Donna' a Damask thanks to Rev. Doug Seidel in May 2001
2. "Brown County" gallica - Semi-double, pink - roadside in Brown County, Ohio. --very likely gallica officinalis
3. "Edward Moy" - cemetery, s. of Kenton, OH; lanky shrub/rambler; single white. fragrant; once blooming. --this is likely a white/pale pink form of R. canina
4. "Fountaine Street" - shrub, Kenton, OH; semi-double, pink-lavender tall shrub, once blooming. --most likely this rose is a form of the understock 'Manettii'
5. North and Main St. - climber?, Kenton, Ohio. --this one is almost certainly 'Dr. Huey'
6. Cream colored rambler/scrambler, glossy foliage - trade from N Calif.  --very likely the wichuraiana rambler 'Alberic Barbier'; thanks once again to Doug Seidel
7. Pink moss from Michigan

9. Non-remontant #2 from Harden Co., Ohio

12. Rambler OGR from Virginia with small round hips
13. Rambler with clusters of dark, pink flowers from Arizona

16. Pink/white china/tea? small 2' shrub, repeat bloom, very double, fragrant --1890 polyantha 'Clothilde Soupert'

"What is the formula? Well, there's no magic in it! Just a little patch of ground; just a little daily loving care; just a little cost; and the result to you and your neighbors will be the glory of the Queen of Flowers."

A few select links

Help Me Find Roses - the first place I go for detailed information about ANY particular rose.

Garden Web's Rose Propagation and Exchange Forum - probably my most visited site, always plenty of discussion about propagation and breeding of roses by amateurs.  A good place to set-up trades of non-patented roses, too.

Old Garden Roses and Beyond by Paul Barden. IMHO, this is surely one of the best personal websites about roses on the net. Each month Paul somehow manages to have an excellent front page article by growers of OGRs and breeders of roses. His photos are superb

Rosa Rosam - I have to agree with the description embedded in this website: the photos are remarkable. There also is contained a number of very interesting articles and stories about roses, such as "Roses in a White Garden" by Nancy Steen. The description: "Roses in New Zealand - High Resolution photography features glorious flowers from an eco climate, in Auckland, New Zealand, where roses bloom alongside camelias.  Fantastic images presented with an artistic view. High Resolution photography."

OrganicRoseGardening.com - A very good and thorough summary that explains organic techniques for growing roses. As time marches on, I tend to garden more organically.

American Rose Society Old Garden Rose page - Nineteen articles about OGR by those who grow them and know them well.

Roger's Roses - Over 5,800 photos of roses, most with detailed descriptions. Roger Phillips, Martyn Rix , and Bill Grant are the authors of this site. Used to be by subscription only. Not any more.

Parsons On the Rose- All 218 pages of the 1883 "Treatise on the propagation, culture, and history of the rose." by Samual B. Parsons.

Brent C. Dickerson - Author of two of the most detailed and complete books about OGRs: The Old Rose Advisor and The Old Rose Adventurer. His page about Old Rose history and synopsis is the best!

Roses at Botany.com - All text about roses: descriptions of rose classes, creating a rose garden, potting, tree roses, winter care, pruning, greenhouse roses, exhibition roses, propagating, lists of varieties.

Rose Hybridizers Association Forum - If you want to learn about hybridizing roses, with much detailed discussion about species roses, go here. I do.

Karl King's Rose Breeding Articles - You will not find a larger collection of articles about breeding of roses anywhere else. These are classic articles from rose breeders. Many are from the ARS Annuals.

Vintage Gardens - This nursery in Sebastapol, California has the most extensive list of roses available of any I know of. Great information on two thousand roses listed in their searchable online catalog

"Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers.  All other things, our desires, our food, are really necessary for our existence in the first instance.  But this rose is extra.  Its smell and its colour are an embellishment of life.  It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope for from the flowers."
-- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle  (1859-1930)
