"During the season, with the garden ablaze with colour, there is usually to be found the odd bush not supplying its full quota of blooms. The owner thinks, "I fear, my dear rose, you are for the bonfire next year." When pruning time comes round and the bush is about to be attacked, a picture of a lovely bloom, either in early spring or late autumn, is suddenly remembered, and the hand of the executioner is stayed. Well perhaps another one lovely bloom, or maybe a few lovely blooms, once in the season." Mrs. C. H. James, The New Zealand Rose Annual, 1964 |
